Safe Storage of Refrigerant Cylinders

Storing refrigerant cylinders correctly is both a legal obligation and a practical safety requirement. UK requirements are governed by DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations) and the Health and Safety at Work Act, in addition to F-Gas obligations.

Core Storage Requirements

  • Store upright with valve caps fitted
  • Secure against falling using cylinder restraints or cages
  • Well-ventilated area — avoid basements where gas could accumulate
  • Away from heat sources — maximum storage temperature typically 50°C
  • Away from ignition sources — essential for A2L refrigerants such as R32
  • Segregated from incompatibles — keep away from oxidisers and flammables

Flammable Refrigerants: Additional Requirements

For A2L (R32) and A3 (R290) refrigerants, additional DSEAR precautions apply: no smoking or open flames in the storage area, adequate signage, and appropriate fire extinguishers. A DSEAR risk assessment is required for the storage area.

Quantity Limits

Small quantities held for routine use typically require standard DSEAR compliance. Larger stocks may need notification to the local fire authority. Consult your local fire service if you regularly stock more than a few cylinders of flammable refrigerant.
