What Happens to Recovered Refrigerant in the UK?

UK F-Gas Regulations require that recovered refrigerant is either reclaimed for reuse, recycled, or destroyed. Understanding the reclaim chain helps engineers comply with their obligations and supports the circular economy for refrigerants.

The Three Routes for Recovered Refrigerant

Reclamation

Reclaimed refrigerant is processed at a specialist facility to restore it to a purity equivalent to virgin gas. It can then be resold and reused — the preferred environmental outcome as it reduces demand for new HFC production.

On-Site Recycling

Recovered gas cleaned of moisture, oil and contaminants using an on-site recovery and recycle machine. Recycled gas may be reused in the same system it came from but cannot move to a different system without meeting reclaimed purity standards.

Destruction

High-GWP refrigerants that cannot be economically reclaimed — such as contaminated R404A — may be sent for thermal destruction. Preferable to atmospheric venting, which is illegal.

Arranging Reclaim Collection

Most UK refrigerant suppliers operate or partner with approved reclaim facilities. Contact your supplier to arrange collection of full recovery cylinders. Label clearly with refrigerant type, weight and any known contaminants.
