Why it replaces R404A
R404A has one of the highest GWPs in common use and is heavily restricted under the F-Gas phase-down. R449A delivers comparable performance with a much lower GWP, making it a leading retrofit and new-system choice.
Retrofitting from R404A
R449A is widely used to retrofit existing R404A systems. Recover the old charge fully, check oil compatibility (a POE oil change may be needed), and follow manufacturer guidance. Note that as a blend, it should be charged as a liquid.
