Refrigerated Transport Refrigerant UK: HGV and Van Systems Explained

Refrigerants in UK Refrigerated Transport

Refrigerated HGVs, vans and trailers rely on transport refrigeration units (TRUs) to maintain temperature-controlled loads. F-Gas regulations apply to mobile refrigeration equipment just as they do to stationary systems.

Common TRU Refrigerants

R404A — Legacy Standard

Until recently, R404A was dominant in Thermo King and Carrier TRUs. With a GWP of 3922, it is subject to F-Gas phase-down restrictions. However, the existing UK fleet requires ongoing servicing, making supply critical. Our R404A 10.9 kg cylinders are available for TRU top-up work.

R452A — Drop-In Replacement

R452A has emerged as a preferred retrofit replacement for R404A in TRUs. Its GWP of 2140 is approximately 45% lower than R404A, and it is compatible with most existing compressors and lubricants.

R134a — Light Commercial

Smaller van-based units often use R134a. Available in 13.6 kg cylinders for top-up work.

F-Gas Compliance for TRUs

All TRU refrigerant work requires F-Gas certification. Keep refrigerant usage logbooks for each unit and send all recovered gas to an approved reclaim facility. Browse our full refrigerant range for all transport refrigeration needs.
