R134a Applications
R134a replaced R12 as the standard automotive AC refrigerant from the mid-1990s and remained mandatory in new passenger vehicles until 2017. It is still the correct refrigerant for servicing millions of UK vehicles manufactured before January 2017. Beyond automotive, R134a is used in medium-temperature commercial refrigeration, transport refrigeration trailers, HVAC systems and industrial process cooling applications.
R134a vs R1234yf
For vehicles from January 2017 onwards, the correct refrigerant is R1234yf — not R134a. The two refrigerants use different valve fittings and are not interchangeable. Always check the vehicle data plate before charging. Browse our full refrigerant gas range including R32, R410A, R404A and R1234yf.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is R134a refrigerant used for in the UK?
R134a is used in older passenger vehicle AC systems (pre-2017), commercial refrigeration, medium-temperature industrial cooling, transport refrigeration and some HVAC applications. It has a GWP of 1,430 and is classified A1 (non-flammable).
Is R134a being replaced in the UK?
Yes, partly. In new passenger vehicles, R134a has been replaced by R1234yf (GWP 4) since 2017. In commercial refrigeration and HVAC, R134a is gradually being replaced by lower-GWP alternatives. However, R134a remains essential for maintaining existing equipment and is widely available from Refrigerant Gas Supplies Ltd.
Can I use R134a in a vehicle with R1234yf?
No. R134a and R1234yf use different valve fittings and are not compatible. Using the wrong refrigerant in a vehicle AC system is illegal under F-Gas regulations, can damage the system and void the vehicle warranty. Always use the refrigerant specified on the vehicle data plate.
Do I need certification to buy R134a in the UK?
Yes. R134a is a regulated F-Gas. UK F-Gas Category I or II certification is required to purchase R134a for AC and refrigeration work. Refrigerant Gas Supplies Ltd supplies exclusively to F-Gas certified engineers and registered companies.
