What Is R600a?
R600a is the refrigerant designation for isobutane — a natural hydrocarbon refrigerant used almost universally in modern domestic refrigerators and freezers in the UK and across Europe. Its combination of excellent thermodynamic efficiency, very low GWP (3) and zero ODP makes it the clear choice for small, hermetically sealed domestic appliances.
Where R600a Is Found
- Household refrigerators and fridge-freezers
- Under-counter and larder fridges
- Wine coolers and drink chillers
- Small hotel minibars
- Some ice cream display freezers
If your fridge was manufactured after approximately 1995, it almost certainly uses R600a. The system charge is typically very small — between 30g and 100g for a domestic appliance.
R600a Safety Considerations
Like R290, R600a is classified A3 (highly flammable). In domestic fridges, the small charge size and hermetically sealed system means the risk is very low in normal use. However:
- Never attempt to repair or recharge a domestic fridge compressor circuit without appropriate A3 training and equipment
- Dispose of old fridges correctly — do not puncture the refrigerant circuit
- Keep open flames away from any refrigerant leak
R600a and UK Appliance Disposal
When disposing of a fridge containing R600a, it must be taken to an approved WEEE recycling facility. The refrigerant must be recovered by a qualified operative before the appliance is shredded or crushed. Fly-tipping old fridges is illegal and dangerous.
When to Call a Professional
If your domestic fridge has stopped cooling and you suspect a refrigerant leak, contact an appliance repair engineer trained in A3 refrigerants. Do not attempt to add refrigerant yourself. For commercial R600a applications, our engineers can advise on appropriate supply options. Browse our full refrigerant range.
