R507 (sometimes R507A) is an azeotropic HFC blend that was widely used in low-temperature commercial and industrial refrigeration. Like R404A, it’s now being phased down due to its very high GWP.
Key properties
- Type: A1 (non-flammable) azeotropic HFC blend
- GWP: around 3985 — very high
- Applications: low-temperature refrigeration, freezing, cold storage
Why it’s being replaced
With one of the highest GWPs in common use, R507 is heavily restricted by the F-Gas phase-down and increasingly costly. Operators are switching to lower-GWP alternatives.
Alternatives
Common replacements mirror those for R404A: R448A and R449A for retrofits and many new systems, with CO2 and hydrocarbons for new low-GWP installations. A retrofit typically involves recovery, an oil check/change to POE, and component verification.
FAQ
Is R507 still available? It remains in legacy systems but, like R404A, is increasingly scarce and expensive under the phase-down — transitioning is recommended.
