R134a in UK Automotive Air Conditioning
R134a has been the standard refrigerant in UK passenger car air conditioning systems since it replaced R12 (CFC) in the early 1990s. Vehicles manufactured before approximately 2017 almost universally use R134a. Post-2017 models use R1234yf. Understanding which refrigerant your vehicle uses is the first step before any AC service work.
How to Identify Your Vehicle’s AC Refrigerant
Check the label under the bonnet near the AC service ports. UK vehicles using R134a will typically show a blue low-pressure service port with “R134a” labelled on the system. A yellow label indicates a vehicle that uses R134a with PAG oil.
Never assume the refrigerant type from vehicle age alone — some fleet or specialist vehicles may have been modified. Always verify.
R134a vs R1234yf: Key Differences
| Property | R134a | R1234yf |
| GWP | 1430 | 4 |
| Flammability | A1 (non-flammable) | A2L (mildly flammable) |

F-Gas Requirements for Automotive AC
UK regulations require that anyone who services vehicle AC systems holds an appropriate certification. For mobile AC work on R134a systems, IMI-certified or City & Guilds-qualified technicians must carry out gas handling. DIY AC top-ups using consumer cans are unregulated for R134a but carry risks if the system has a fault.
