One of the most common questions we’re asked is whether you need F-Gas certification to buy refrigerant. The short answer is yes for most situations — here’s how it works.

The legal requirement

Under the F-Gas Regulation, it is illegal to sell certain fluorinated refrigerants to anyone who isn’t appropriately qualified, or to a business that doesn’t employ certified personnel. This is designed to ensure refrigerants are handled by people trained to prevent leaks and dispose of gas correctly.

Who needs certification?

  • Engineers installing, servicing or decommissioning refrigeration, AC and heat pump equipment
  • Anyone handling, charging or recovering F-Gas refrigerants
  • Companies employing engineers who do the above

Getting certified

Individuals obtain an F-Gas qualification (such as City & Guilds 2079) through an approved training centre, while companies need company certification. Certification confirms you can handle refrigerants safely and legally.

FAQ
