Refrigerant in UK VRF Systems
VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) systems are widely used in UK commercial and mixed-use buildings. They allow simultaneous heating and cooling across multiple zones from a single outdoor unit, making them ideal for offices, hotels and retail environments. Understanding the refrigerant requirements of VRF systems is essential for commissioning and service engineers.
R410A — The Legacy VRF Refrigerant
The majority of VRF systems installed in UK buildings over the past 15 years use R410A. The large refrigerant pipework networks in VRF systems mean charge weights can be substantial — 20, 50 or even 100+ kg in large installations — placing them firmly within mandatory F-Gas leak check requirements.
For servicing existing R410A VRF systems, our R410A 10 kg refillable cylinders provide the trade-standard supply format.
R32 VRF — The New Generation
Major VRF manufacturers including Daikin, Mitsubishi, LG and Samsung have launched or are launching R32 VRF ranges. R32 offers approximately 68% lower GWP than R410A and improved efficiency, particularly in heat recovery mode.
R32 VRF installations require attention to the A2L flammability classification — EN 378 and manufacturer guidelines must be followed for machine room ventilation and leak detection system requirements where applicable.
F-Gas Compliance for VRF Systems
VRF systems almost always exceed the 5 tonne CO2e threshold that triggers mandatory leak checks. For R410A VRF: 5 tonnes CO2e = approximately 2.4 kg of R410A. Most VRF systems contain far more than this. Annual leak checks (minimum) must be documented in the system logbook.
