A refrigerant recovery machine is mandatory equipment for UK F-Gas certified engineers. You cannot legally vent refrigerant to atmosphere — it must be recovered before any system work. Choosing the right machine for the refrigerants you work with, particularly A2L types like R32, is critical for both compliance and safety.
Types of Refrigerant Recovery Machine
Recovery machines fall into two main categories: single-cylinder (recovery to an external cylinder) and self-contained with integral tank (machine and storage tank combined). For field service work, single-cylinder machines feeding into a separate recovery cylinder are standard.
Recovery speed is measured in kg/hr or lbs/min. Faster machines reduce job time on large commercial systems with heavy refrigerant charges. For residential split AC (R32 or R410A) a mid-speed machine (0.3-0.6 kg/min) is perfectly adequate.
A2L Compatibility for R32
If you work on R32 systems, your recovery machine must be rated for A2L refrigerants. The internal motor and electrical components must be spark-free or explosion-proof to prevent ignition of R32 vapour during recovery. Many older machines designed for R410A are not A2L compatible — check the manufacturer’s rating before using on R32 systems.
Major brands offering A2L-rated recovery machines in the UK include Javac, Appion, CPS Products and Fieldpiece. Always verify the specific model’s A2L rating, not just the brand.
Push-Pull Recovery Method
The push-pull method connects the recovery machine in-line between the system and recovery cylinder. High-side gas is pushed out while the machine simultaneously pulls from the low side. This dramatically increases recovery speed for large systems and reduces recovery time from 20-30 minutes to under 10 minutes for typical residential systems.
Maintaining Your Recovery Machine
- Change the internal oil every 50-100 hours of operation or annually
- Replace inlet filter screens when recovery speed drops noticeably
- Never run the machine dry — always ensure refrigerant is present before starting
- Purge the machine with nitrogen after recovery of different refrigerant types
- Store with oil in the machine to prevent corrosion of internal components
After recovery, recharge with the correct refrigerant from Refrigerant Gas Supplies Ltd — R32, R410A, R404A and R407C all available for next-day UK delivery.
