Are R32 Systems Required to Have Leak Checks?

Yes. R32 is a fluorinated greenhouse gas regulated under UK F-Gas Regulations. Any system containing R32 at or above 5 tonnes CO2 equivalent (approximately 7.4 kg of R32 at GWP 675) is subject to mandatory periodic leak checks. However, the vast majority of domestic R32 heat pumps and split AC systems fall below this threshold due to small charge sizes.

F-Gas Leak Check Thresholds

• Below 5 tonnes CO2e: No mandatory periodic leak checks (but repair any known leaks promptly)
• 5–50 tonnes CO2e: Annual leak check required
• 50–500 tonnes CO2e: Leak check every 6 months
• 500+ tonnes CO2e: Leak check every 3 months

For R32 (GWP 675): 5 tonnes CO2e = approximately 7.4 kg. Most domestic heat pumps (0.8–2.5 kg charge) fall well below this threshold. Larger commercial multi-split systems with multiple circuits may exceed it.

Leak Detection Methods for R32

Because R32 is A2L (mildly flammable), leak detection equipment should be rated for flammable refrigerants:

• Electronic leak detectors: Must be rated or calibrated for R32. Infrared detectors are generally A2L-compatible.
• UV dye: Requires R32-compatible POE-based dye
• Soap solution: Useful for confirming pinpointed leak locations
