Refrigerant Selection in UK Commercial Refrigeration

Commercial refrigeration encompasses a wide range of applications — from small under-counter cabinets to large industrial cold stores. The right refrigerant depends on the application temperature range, system size, energy efficiency targets and F-Gas compliance requirements.

Common UK Commercial Refrigeration Refrigerants

R404A — Legacy Medium and Low Temperature

R404A has historically been the standard for medium-temperature display cabinets and low-temperature freezers in supermarkets, convenience stores and cold stores. Its GWP of 3922 makes it subject to F-Gas phase-down restrictions, and alternatives are strongly recommended for new installations.

R448A and R449A — Lower-GWP Replacements

R448A (GWP ~1387) and R449A (GWP ~1282) are the primary drop-in replacements for R404A in commercial refrigeration. Compatible with existing equipment, they offer significant GWP reductions without requiring complete system redesign.

R134a — Medium Temperature

R134a is used in medium-temperature commercial applications including drinks coolers, wine cabinets and server room cooling. GWP 1430.

R744 (CO2) — Future-Proof Low GWP

CO2 transcritical systems are increasingly used in supermarket refrigeration due to their ultra-low GWP (1) and energy efficiency at low temperatures. However, they require purpose-built high-pressure equipment and specialist commissioning.

R290 (Propane) — Small Commercial Equipment

Self-contained commercial equipment (ice cream cabinets, small display coolers) increasingly uses R290 propane. GWP of 3 makes it future-proof, but A3 flammability classification limits application scope.
