Refrigerant is supplied in a range of cylinder sizes, and choosing the right one helps manage cost, storage and waste. Here’s what to know.
Common cylinder formats
- Disposable / non-refillable cylinders — small, convenient sizes; note that single-use disposable refrigerant cylinders are restricted under F-Gas rules
- Refillable cylinders — larger, returnable cylinders that reduce waste and are the compliant choice
- Recovery cylinders — purpose-built for storing recovered refrigerant safely
Choosing a size
Match the cylinder to your usage: larger cylinders cost less per kilo and suit busy engineers and commercial work, while smaller quantities suit occasional jobs. Avoid buying more than you’ll use within a reasonable time.
Important notes
- Single-use disposable cylinders for HFCs are banned under F-Gas rules — use refillable cylinders
- Always check the cylinder is within its test date
- Never overfill, and observe safe fill limits for recovery cylinders
