R407F is an HFC blend developed as a lower-GWP alternative to R404A and R22 in commercial refrigeration. It offers a useful step down in GWP with good efficiency.
Key properties
- Type: A1 (non-flammable) zeotropic HFC blend
- GWP: around 1825 — roughly half that of R404A
- Applications: medium and low-temperature commercial refrigeration
Strengths and considerations
R407F can improve energy efficiency compared with R404A in many systems and is a recognised retrofit option. As a zeotropic blend it has temperature glide, so it must be charged as a liquid and superheat/subcooling calculated using the correct dew and bubble points. Discharge temperatures can run higher, so check compressor limits.
How it compares
R407F sits between R404A and the newest HFO blends (R448A/R449A, GWP ~1390) on GWP. For the lowest GWP, R448A/R449A or natural refrigerants are preferred, but R407F remains a valid option in some retrofits.
FAQ
Is R407F a drop-in for R404A? It’s a recognised retrofit, but expect an oil check, liquid charging and glide considerations — not a no-change swap.
