Refrigerant leaks waste expensive gas, harm efficiency and release potent greenhouse gases. The F-Gas Regulation therefore requires regular leak checks on many systems, with frequency based on the size of the charge.
Leak check frequency
How often you must check depends on the system’s CO2-equivalent charge — larger charges require more frequent checks. As a general principle, the bigger the climate impact of a potential leak, the more often it must be inspected. Fitting an automatic leak detection system can extend the interval between manual checks for larger systems.
Who can carry out checks
Leak checks on F-Gas equipment must be performed by appropriately certified personnel using suitable methods and calibrated equipment.
Fixing leaks
Where a leak is found, it must be repaired as soon as possible, and a follow-up check carried out (typically within a month) to confirm the repair was effective. All of this should be documented in your records.
FAQ
How often do I need a leak check? It depends on the CO2-equivalent charge of the system — higher charges mean more frequent mandatory checks. Check the current thresholds for your equipment.
