Refrigerants are potent greenhouse gases, and releasing them to the atmosphere is both environmentally damaging and illegal. Proper recovery and disposal is a legal requirement under the F-Gas Regulation.

Never vent refrigerant

Deliberately releasing F-Gas refrigerant is prohibited. All refrigerant must be recovered from systems during service and decommissioning using proper recovery equipment.

The correct process

  1. Recover the refrigerant into a suitable recovery cylinder using a recovery machine
  2. Label the cylinder clearly with the refrigerant type
  3. Reclaim or destroy — send recovered gas to an approved reclamation or disposal facility

Reclaimed refrigerant can often be cleaned and reused, which supports the phase-down by reducing demand for virgin gas.

Records and responsibilities

Keep records of recovered refrigerant and its disposal. Only certified personnel should carry out recovery, and recovery cylinders must be in good condition and within test date.

FAQ

Can I reuse recovered refrigerant? Recovered gas can be reused in the same system or sent for reclamation to be cleaned to a reusable standard.
