F-Gas certification is a legal requirement for UK engineers who install, service or decommission refrigeration, AC and heat pump systems containing fluorinated greenhouse gases. This guide explains the main qualification routes and what they cover.

Two Main UK F-Gas Qualification Routes

• City & Guilds 2079: Most widely recognised. Available at Category I (full scope) and Category II (limited — A1 non-flammable gases only, smaller charges). 3–5 days training and assessment at approved centres.
• ACS Units: Individual assessed competency units covering refrigerant handling and leak checking. Often taken by engineers with NVQ Level 2/3 in refrigeration.

Category I vs Category II

• Category I: Full scope — all fluorinated refrigerants including A2L gases (R32, R1234yf), no charge weight restriction. Required for most commercial HVAC work.
• Category II: Restricted to A1 non-flammable refrigerants and smaller charge sizes. Not valid for R32 or R1234yf.

Refrigerant safety and properties, F-Gas legislation, leak checking schedules, refrigerant recovery and recycling, charging procedures, cylinder handling, PPE requirements, record keeping obligations.
